I served in the British Army for 30 years, with service in the Black Watch Regiment as an Infantryman and the Royal Army Medical Corps as a Combat Medical Technician.
My career took meworldwide, incuding Iraq, Kosovo (twice), Northern Ireland (twice), and Afghanistan, where I served as a combat medic during Operation Moshtarak in 2010.
During that deployment, I recorded extensive footage using a camera attached to my body-armour. Much of that material has since been accepted into the Imperial War Museums collection.
The short clip below was filmed during my time in Afghanistan and shows an encounter with members of the Taliban, recorded from my position on the ground.
From Infanteer to Medic
Why did I transfer from the Black Watch to the Royal Army Medical Corps? I made that move because I wanted to do more than fight. I wanted to help, to mend, to heal, and to listen. Those simple things sit at the heart of who we are as humans. As a Combat Medical Technician, I worked on the front line, treating the wounded and supporting those who carried the weight beside me. After leaving the Regular Army, I stayed on with the Army Reserves until 2023. My son now follows in my footsteps, serving in the Royal Engineers as a Plant Operator and Physical Training Instructor.
